Offseason Training

It’s summertime, and the sun is high in the sky. As students, it can be very easy for us to lose sight of our academic goals. Test prep is just like playing sports. If you don’t practice during the offseason or train your body physically, then you won’t be able to improve on the field, track, court, etc. or achieve your sports goals. Test prep follows the exact same trend. Athletes don’t learn new skills by avoiding practice in the same way that students don’t magically improve their test scores by not practicing. 

It is important for us, especially during summer’s many distractions, to set timely goals. Why timely? Well if you are anything like how I was in high school, then you’ll find any excuse to avoid test prep. Time-dependent goals force a sense of urgency. Now, our goals need to be not only timely but also attainable. I’m not going to force myself to study grammar for 3 hours in a single day during the summer when I’d rather be at the lake with my friends. What I can do is find 30 minutes each day to work on grammar or whichever section I need to improve. We have to be realistic. How many hours per week am I actually willing to dedicate to getting better at standardized tests like the SAT or APs? We set time aside for team/individual sports practices, so why not do the same for our academics? 

In the offseason for sports, athletes train their bodies to prepare for the game. We as students have to train our brains to prepare for the SAT/ ACT. These tests are not like your math tests in high school or reading tests in English class. They are meticulously written to trap us and leave us with scores that don’t reflect our intelligence whatsoever. Our job is to practice the strategies to beat these tests. Just like sports, if we come up with the right game plan, then any opposing team or the SAT/ACT can be conquered.
