What Is AP Research?
AP Research is an interdisciplinary course designed to build upon skills learned in AP Seminar that teaches students how to conduct thoughtful, deep, original research on a specific academic topic, issue, or problem (students may choose their own topic). Throughout the course, students can learn skills such as analyzing evidence and sources, conducting independent research, writing an academic paper at the college level, and presenting research to an audience. In order to take AP Research, students must complete AP Seminar first. Students who complete the course and pass the accompanying assessment may be able to gain college credit for an equivalent course, such as introductory research or an elective; this depends on what research topics students explore.
The AP Research Exam: What You Need to Know
Instead of a traditional end-of-course written exam, there is the AP Research assessment. Students are assessed on their completion of several performance tasks that are based on the research project they’ve spent the whole course completing. This includes submitting an academic paper, which must be between 4,000-5,000 words and is worth 75% of their assessment score. Students must also present and defend their research project orally to a panel of judges, and this is worth 25% of their assessment score. Trained, experienced AP readers score the research paper while the AP Research teacher scores the presentation. These scores are combined to create one score on a scale of 1-5, with 5 being the highest score achievable.
