The AP Capstone Diploma Program is a 2-year program for high school AP students where they take 2 courses, AP Seminar and AP Research, and have assessments at the end of the year. The capstone program specifically consists of these 2 courses, but to get the capstone diploma, students must earn scores of 3 or higher on 4 other AP exams. In Grade 10 or 11, students take AP Seminar first, where they learn how to investigate, analyze, and converse on different academic and cultural topics. Several essays, presentations, and an oral defense make up the exam. Then, they take AP Research, where they build upon skills learned in AP Seminar to investigate an original research topic and spend the year writing a paper on it. At the end of the year, they turn in their paper and provide an oral defense, with this counting as their exam. Students can earn college credit or college course placement by passing these exams.
The AP Capstone Diploma Program Exam: What You Need to Know
AP Seminar and AP Research both have assessments at the end of the year that consist of several different components.
For AP Seminar, students have 3 components; 2 performance tasks and a written exam. Performance task 1 is an individual research report and a group multimedia presentation and defense worth 20% of their score. Performance task 2 is an individual written argument, multimedia presentation, and oral defense and is worth 35% of their score. The end-of-course exam lasts 2 hours and is worth 45% of their score; students must answer 3 short-response questions and write an essay.
For AP Research, students must write an academic paper worth 75% of their score and give a presentation and oral defense worth 25% of their score. Students' scores are determined by teacher assessment and the College Board and are based on a scale of 1-5, with 5 meaning students are extremely well-qualified to receive college credit. Students must register for exams by November and pay a fee through their school's AP Coordinator.
