What is AP Music Theory?

AP Music Theory is a high school class that can also provide college credit because its content is similar to a beginning level college music theory class. This class is meant to be taken by students who have some background in musical notation and are capable of performing either vocally or on an instrument. The AP Music Theory exam is taken towards the end of the class in order to prove a student has mastered the concepts within the accepted standards to be eligible for potential college credit.
Students can also use AP Music Theory exam results in order to obtain college class placement. The class covers a variety of musical concepts including being able to interpret notation and understand keys as well as chords. Students in the AP Music Theory class are also expected to understand concepts such as pitch and rhythm as well as being able to put these into action either vocally or on an instrument.

The AP Music Theory Exam: What You Need to Know

The AP Music Theory exam contains three separate sections: multiple choice, written, and sight singing. The multiple choice section consists of 75 questions which account for 45% of the exam score and has a time limit of 1 hour and 20 minutes. The second section requires written responses to the seven questions given and makes up 45% of the exam score with an hour and 10 minute timeframe. Finally, an examinee is required to sing two previously unseen brief musical selections which counts for 10% of the exam score and requires 10 minutes.
The score of all three sections are combined to establish a student’s score ranging from 1-5. A score of 5 means a student is extremely well qualified and is potentially equal to an A in a college class, a 4 is considered well qualified and potentially equal to a college A-, B+, or B. A score of 3 is considered qualified and potentially equal to a college level B-, C+, or C, while a 2 is classified as possibly qualified and a score of 1 means no recommendation. A student must sign up online ahead of time for the AP Music Theory exam.
